What the numbers are
Each figure converts a city’s annual mean PM2.5 into cigarettes using the equivalence published by Berkeley Earth (22 µg/m³ for 24 hours ≈ one cigarette). PM2.5 values are rounded estimates for the most recent reporting year and some cities use their nearest monitored station. They are a sense of scale, not a health assessment of any person or place.
